About Hronir Observer

Hronir Observer is an independent investigative journalism platform dedicated to uncovering political and corporate corruption while maintaining the highest standards of journalistic integrity and source protection.

The Meaning of Hrönir

The name “Hronir” comes from Jorge Luis Borges’ short story “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius,” where hrönir (singular: hrön) are objects that emerge when two people seek the same thing and both find it at different times or places. In the fictional world of Tlön, where idealism reigns and objects exist only in perception, hrönir represent the multiplication of reality through collective desire and observation.

Borges positions these objects as fundamentally literary—arising from imagination, expectation, and interpretation rather than physical persistence. When two people independently discover the same “lost” thing, there are now strangely two things. Since fictional objects emerge from thought alone, nothing prevents their duplication. Every reader perceives a different version of a character or space in a story: they are multiple and yet the same.

This resonates deeply with investigative journalism. Each investigation into corruption creates its own hrön—a unique perspective on truth that multiplies and transforms as more journalists and sources converge on the same hidden reality. The coins that scandalized Tlön’s materialists (because they persisted when unperceived) mirror leaked documents that persist despite attempts to suppress them. The ur-objects (emerging from indirect suggestions by others) parallel whistleblower tips that materialize from fragments of overheard conversations.

Unlike Tlön’s idealists who deny material persistence, we believe in the stubborn reality of corruption—but we acknowledge that journalistic truth is successive, temporal, and constructed through collective observation. Each report, each source, each reader creates new hrönir of understanding, multiplying perspectives until the full dimensionality of institutional wrongdoing emerges from the literary space of investigation into the material space of accountability.
